FROM THE ASHES

ANGELHOUSEPRESS

DETAILS:
Read the message from #AmandaEarl of #AngelHousePress
I’m Amanda Earl, the fallen angel of AngelHousePress,  a defiant feminist press I established in 2007.  After over a decade of publishing chapbooks, we switched to focusing on our online publications only. While publishing chapbooks meant we gave complementary copies to the contributors, and half price on additional copies, we didn't offer compensation to contributors to our online publications. I promised myself that one day, I would change that.
If I wanted AngelHousePress to celebrate the work of writers and artists, especially those erased from the literary canon, to provide welcoming spaces for these voices, and to ensure that they were amplified and heard, I needed to figure out a way to make sure we paid our contributors and I also needed to make sure my community went beyond the little white circle I was in.
Through over 20 years as a writer, publisher and editor I have learned of the importance of community, of centering and supporting the voices of creators, especially those who are systematically excluded from the literary canon, including paying them for their work.
Thank you to Nora Rahimian for introducing me to the term “systematically excluded” rather than “underrepresented” or “marginalized” which are passive qualifiers that lack accountability.
This is where you come in.  In 2022, we held our first crowd funding campaign. Thanks to our backers, including many of you! the campaign was a glowing success. It was heartening to see that we were able to raise almost $3,000.  We used your donations to pay our contributors for NationalPoetryMonth.ca and Experiment-O, 40 creators from Asia, Australia, North America, Europe and UK. Small presses around the world donated publications and merch for the campaign. This year we’re going to do it again with your help.
"Many writers of colour struggle to get a foot in the door of the literary scene and do not have the privilege of giving away their time and labor for free." Jacqueline Valencia, Conceptualism in the Resistance, The Town Crier, Puritan Magazine, April 2017.
"To pay a writer is to affirm that we neither want nor need them to starve or suffer for their craft. Compensation for writing articulates clearly that art can have as much cultural value as other forms of production." —Jade Wallace, Reviews Editor for CAROUSEL
While a small amount of compensation might not seem like much, it might provide much needed support, especially if other publications also provide payment.
What We Need from YouOnce again I’m asking you to donate funds. I'm hoping to pay at least $50 per contributor for a total of $2000 or more, if I receive more money. I will divide the amount received minus charges equally between the contributors. We will once again highlight small presses actively involved in community-building and inclusion.
What You Will ReceiveThere are wonderful donations (perks) offered by presses and magazines: including sold out and limited-edition handsewn chapbooks, letterpress and artists' books, tote bags, gift certificates, magazine subscriptions, and of course books galore. These generous donations come from presses and magazines in Asia, Canada, Europe, UK and USA."

    DEAR READER
Welcome to my literature, music, and visual poetry project. My blog represents a method for deciphering the fragments left behind in the Anthropocene. Writers use ashes as a metaphorical device in storytelling. Have you ever wondered about the symbolism of ashes? Archaeological fragments of tablet, papyrus, bone, scroll, and pottery are recognizable the world over. In our digital era, however, our lost folkloric works disintegrate into dust. In this sense, I consume the silver flakes and use my he{art] as a vessel to rise from dystopic wastelands. I share lore through the oral tradition. Ashes to Ashes we continue on ∞ to infinity ∞ We are ash. We are stories. We are star dust. We are eternal.
