SHOWING THE PROESS:
ABOUT THE WORDPLAY WORKSHOP
WHO:
WHEN: TIME: 18:00 HRS Paris time (6PM for civilians) / DATE: Sunday, 4 OCTOBER 2025
WHERE: Virtually over Zoom. Check out this site for more information: WriteTime Workshop — Matthew James Jones
WHY: Over the years, Jones has helped hundreds of writers get published, find agents, sell manuscripts, and grow in craft.
This is a working outline for my Word Play Workshop plan.
Backstory: I got about 10 chapters into the book and asked Jones if I could "destroy his book and rip it to shreds for my own satisfaction and play." He wrote back "You can absolutely do that once you have read the entire book." He signed off the email stating I was a maniac and I got to work reading the entire book (see my notes).
OUTLINE FOR OCTOBER WORKSHOP:
Question: What is visual poetry? Show book(s). Discuss Bowie's cut-up method borrowed from generations of artists
Folklore: Because I am incredibly interested in the lore within the book Predators. Reapers & Deadlier Creatures, I am going to use the book as an example for my art practice. Because I am interested especially in the lore, I've tracked the monsters by listing them in the margins. This very first page introduces a prominent figure in the book. I need to shine a light on the mythological beast.
Tone: The first sentence alone sets the feeling for the art. I knew I wanted to mention the letter 'O' and the helicopter (those blades felt symbolic to me regarding the disaster at the market).
Materials: Soft white pastel for word coverage and green pastel for a pop of color. Built the helicopter blades around the letter 'O' mentioned in the chapter. Color pencils for the creature. Black ink stamping to form more context within the erasure piece.
Process: I usually make recordings of myself while at play. I record the process and then turn that process into a piece of art. I've entitled these videos: 'Wine-ing with Maggs': a Glitch-Bitch Production." I plan to make more short poetry videos showing my process.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Writing is hard work but it is, more importantly, play. After ten years of running workshops, and teaching creative writing, I throw the doors open wide: poets, novelists, playwrights, academics, and narrative-software writers, anyone passionate enough to ignite curiosity.
The WordPlay Workshop, held virtually on the first Sunday of the month at 18h Paris-time, features guest lecturers eager to share tips on craft. It also empowers writers of all levels to give and receive potent, yet encouraging critique.
Over the years, I’ve helped hundreds of writers get published, find agents, sell manuscripts, and grow in craft."
