Thoughts on Malik Ameer Crumpler & And Them Earth Moments avec Some A.I. Poets

Much like other Crumpler poetry, these tracks are challenging, layered, and lyrical. As with all art by Crumpler, it will take me time (eons perhaps) to fully comprehend. Keep an eye on this space.

hyperphantasia featuring A.I. Quartet & The Real Life Chamber Orchestra (7:39): The narrator stutters as the music falters, too. Gives a raw description for bones, the way we breathe, and how we remember...
obsidian nectarines (5:16): An Arkansas description and the feeling of nails on a chalkboard ( in both the best and worst and ways possible) ...
uncomfortable listening (12:07): This hallucinatory mix is a little like if Rod Serling mindfucked an extraterrestrial and birthed a soothsayer. A narrator 's voice echoes "Wet Wipes" while a pianist slams out discordant keys akin to Blue Boyé which howl out in dissonance. Grandma is dignity personified and schooled in jazz. With radical honesty, we peer into a mirrored ball of society's depravity. Algorithms fuel echo chambers which chew culture as a type of glory marketing war of attrition. Is there a mention of key figures in the manospherealternativefactsadrenochromeparanoiapizzagatefreak-offs? It is up to the listener to decide whether or not to believe visceral words. This quagmire drained by seventy-two huckle bearers asking a central question: "What about all these homeless Grandmas? What child couldn't afford to prevent their grandma from winding up on these streets, praying for change?... What severely wounded grandchild couldn't keep grandma off these streets in winter?" ...
that Sayless deity (6:56): A creaky door to a Liber Novus cleansing of the geography of memory, and we know what you mean! Singgggg
ellipsees (14:12): The gavel strikes because time is not linear. A collective memory of Peace whispers to Thalia, "I suppose the usual profits of chaos are profiting well?" This gavel strikes into the heart of a fake justice. And our old stories of chaos continue as they always have but have a more modern look, "dot dot dot dot dot dot dot dot" of greed, propaganda, nuclear submarines, environmental disasters, drone warfare "dot dot dot dot dot dot dot." At the 2:50 mark the minor keys both unnerve and speak to our sadness. We are not alone. The surreal comedy of Thalia makes sure we know our grandchildren will endure somehow in this hellscape and the sound continues dot dot dot dot dot throughout time. ... ... ... ...
the looking has teeth (3:35): Instructions from the muses to transform our agony to art. "We are infinite, but never whole."

Rating of the tracks: Because each song has a divine ability to see through the "pixelated mirrors" of modern life, I cannot possible (as mere mortal) rate it better than the gods already have. It awakens the soul & & & dot dot dot dot dot dot dot ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

Thoughts on Malik Ameer Crumpler's Madison Washington (((( FACTS ))))

1. Bioluminescence featuring Edward Sherfield so this song hits differently nowadays.

2. Facts: Today I am struggling with this song or rather it is playing on a loop in my mind. 6-3 decision by SCOTUS to reverse the voting rights act. WTAF are we doing? The whole thing being ripped to shreds like toilet paper. Charmin feels stronger at this point. The song is right. I AM too fucking sensitive to understand how we are going to get through this next stage. The coffee, the ashwagandha, and the grind (rinse and repeat). "Now back to our show." World is a stage, but I really ain't feeling this script. Roe v. Wade and some Atwoodian crazy shit going on. I think that is another reason the title of this LP is thought-provoking. Let me just ask about the lyrics...how does he do it? Malik is next level with the fast rap. Each time you listen to this track, especially, you are reminded that he is lightning.

every day, all day, ya hold It in fake smile, fake laugh & fake grins takes the strength of about ten men not to tell the truth, not to let It loose got ya feelin’ like a lion in a zoo ya see the news & ya see It as the proof ya check ya social media & wanna plan a coup ya look ya significant other in the face & ask, “What the fuck am I gone do?”

3. Baytrified featuring JTOTHEC. It is a funky groove that makes you drop your hip, but the lyrics share some real shit. This is what happens when you go through the history and peel back the layers. As before: rinse and repeat. A wealthy and powerful group purchases properties or land and then tries to commodify the spirit of a location. The wealthy push out and price out the culture and move in... leaving the shell or a whisper of the people who made the place special to begin with. It's gentrification 101 in song and verse. As before, the stand out lyric is in quotations below:

The Ohlone people when They destroyed that land & destroyed that man & then built They houses & brought they spouses & hired my grandmamma to iron they blouses Now, it’s time to see if they gone give crack to They community You dig me, Yay?

4. My N.Y. has such a groovy smooth sound, so it hits that much harder when Nicole Goodwin poets an excerpt from Brother from Another Planet (A Warrior). The shout-out to Dali, Basquiat, De Kooning, Langston Hughes, and Jean Toomer just adds an additional recognition to fellow artists that is important to see. That thread of gentrification continues on with the mention of how there is a lack of a common coffee shop chain (see below).

New York was like ‘Freedom Land’. It really was, until it started changin’ into millionaire land." [...] "not a Starbucks anywhere."

5, Californie Hypnagogique is a tough listen. It confuses you at first because that rhythm and cadence is old school. You can feel it when the lyrics take a dark turn. The lyrics mention troubled relationship with fathers, Glocks, the KKK, and henchmen. It's when the prostitutes were using crystal and confessing some really dark trafficking incidents that the lyrics read like pages from the Epstein files or a Diddy White Party. It truly is like waking up from a nightmare and the song makes sure to keep things at 100. If you aren't listening to the lyrics, it just sounds like an upbeat melody and you could nearly be forgiven for falling into the mainstream sun-soaked fantasy of California as a collective, hallucinated dream, instead of the harsh realities. No point to put the standout lyrics because the whole track is a violent firestorm: 10 out of 10.

6. Discernment featuring Jamika Ajalon is the great awakening. It is the moment it all clicks. The A'ha moment. The moment where we realize the name of the album carries so much weight with the contents in each song. It is a How-To Manual or a manual for the French Resistance in singalong version.

7. Monkz Point: It's in the following para that I see we are definitely NOT FINE. *we are shouting Fiiiiiiine. It's the Big Band Harlem sound mixing with the complex unpredictable jazz and underground hip-hop. Lots of mentions and honors to jazz legends in the lyrics. It is like a recipe for saying the thing out loud (to keep hold of the tangible) and using the history (the songs and legends of the past) to navigate this era. As with all things written by Malik, notice that time is not linear. Notice the use of historical references and how he flips the script to show the power therein by continuing the thread with Madison Washington and a later track "Mutineer State of Mind." It is through the mind/gut that we see the connection to what is real regardless of a pleasant sound. The scat/to scat/to be/to see/to flee/you see? You either scat or you die. The verse brings the reality of enslavement to focus. You fight or you sink in that ship and are gone forever.

It ain't that we're crazy
It's just that We live in crazy times.
& I head, "Crazy don't like ugly."
So, We're ugly, crazy, FINE."

in fact, with greater scrutiny Eye declare mutiny on this ship
now, who the fuck is up for It?
Eye don’t wear no Guy Fawkes mask."

8. Madame Pomegranate Featuring Elgin Wayne Giles is a dance song. Mentioning Herry Rice (both a football and dancing legend), provides context. It is the underdog vibe where the rules do not apply when the game is rigged. You must dance the tune, but find in oneself the strength to be the absolute best. Here is the standout lyric:

So, let’s just let tonight be like one mass strike
A limited glimpse, of limitless strength composed to ignite
