LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

I reside on the land of the Monacan peoples. I honor the ancestral lands of the past, present, and future Monacan, Powhatan, and the many tribes who are the original inhabitants. I acknowledge the people in the communities I interact with in Virginia, DC, and Maryland. I acknowledge elders, both past and present, as well as future generations. I acknowledge the systems which act upon exclusions and erasures of many Indigenous peoples, including those on whose land I currently reside. This acknowledgement demonstrates a commitment to begin the process of working to dismantle the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism."

WHAT IS A LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT?

What is a Land Acknowledgment?
A Land Acknowledgment is a formal statement that recognizes and respects Indigenous Peoples as traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and traditional territories. To find out more, please visit: Native-Land.ca. Why should we recognize the land?
To recognize the land is an expression of gratitude and appreciation to those whose territory I reside on, and a way of honoring the Indigenous people who have been living and working on the land from time immemorial. It is important to understand the long-standing history that has brought me to reside on the land, and to seek to understand my place within that history. Land acknowledgments do not exist in a past tense, or historical context: colonialism is a current ongoing process, and I must build mindfulness of my present participation.
